It is deeply contended that the city of Rio de Janeiro, with its population of 10 million residents, is amongst the most violent cities in the world. If you had any doubts about that, just take a look at the pictures below taken by a Portuguese photographer.

There are pictures showing gangs, complete with their latest weapons and ammunitions. You see the police and militia trying to fight the rising tide of crime, with more violence, even having to start gun battles in broad daylight. Even when the youth of Rio de Janeiro indulges in a few moments of fun and play with other younger kids around, he doesn’t do it without it without his weaponry on him. The pictures of funerals, pall bearers carrying the body of another victim, graves being visited by elderly parents are pictures of victims who may not have been wounded in gun battles, but are scarred for life.

What does one expect a typical child of 9 years to do with his life? Mostly, your expectations would involve play, learn, study, interact with his peers, develop, etc. The sad truth of the matter is that many in many parts of the world kids simply don’t have this opportunity. And, the casue is not poverty, it is far worse than that. Somali kids, starting from the age of 9 are trained to be fighting soldiers. Instead of learning the techniques of soccer and baseball, they are trained in operating and cleaning automatic rifles.

Look at the heart chilling photographs of 12 and 15 year boys with loaded Kalashnikov rifles in their hands. What happened to their childhood? We have always heard that we should learn to see the world through a child’s eyes, but what the eyes of these children see, one hopes never too see.

Abandoned Military Base from End of Soviet Era

The end of the Soviet era has left a number of signs and markers across Russia. These pictures are another one of those signs. What would have been a highly protected base, unknown to but a few, is now lying abandoned. Earlier, only individuals with high security clearance would have been able to lay their eye on it, now it is free for all to see. Just take a look at these pictures to see what has come of the highly secured bases of the Soviet era.

You see a base that would have been a hub of activity when it was being used. There are a number of exits and entrances, perhaps for cargo, goods or people of different clearance levels. Now they are all but fully rusted. Where there was camouflage paint, there are now stains of rust instead. We even see an abandoned canvas bag that a soldier perhaps left behind.

Many of us like to indulge in a bit of puzzle solving once in a while, but for some it can become something of a mania. Take a look at this guy’s collection, for instance. There are so many puzzles in there, it seems scarcely possible that there can be so many varieties, let alone the fact that someone can solve them all! Of course, it does raise the question- does this guy simply collect all these puzzles, which seems a fair enough pursuit, or is he also actually able to solve all of them? This is a question one would dearly like to be answered. Of course, if this guy can solve all these puzzles, he can be nothing short of a genius in his own right!

A child’s mind is like a loose mortar that can be transformed into any shape but stands as the most essential ingredient for the strongest foundation of a being. Whatever a man becomes in his life is not only determined by his education, but also how he has grown up as an individual. Home, neighborhood, school and workplace, a person learns from his surroundings lot more than what is spoon-fed by the learned people.
Love, care, praise, rewards have indeed boosted the morale, but there are those who have faced rejection, criticism, seclusion, trauma and various mental upheavals, that have left a deep impact on lives changing their insights. So much so that as they grow, they craft a new world around them, that has a story, its own characters, villains, heroes, a defined goal and actions, all mastered and implemented by one mind. However these people with more of a villainous motive, become a great threat to the society. The world calls them serial killers who hunt down innocent lives merely because of their wrong perception of the world and the people living around.
So lets us take a look at some the very famous serial killers who kept FBI on its toes for days, months and even years and learn what motivated these unkind actions in their life.

Herbert Williams Mullin

Son of a World War II veteran, Mullin was brought up listening to the heroic deeds of his father who also taught him to use a gun at a very young age. His life took an unexpected turn when one of his best friends died in a car accident soon after Mullin graduated from high school. He often moved in and out of various mental hospitals and finally moved to his parent’s house when he was 25. But the worse was still imminent. Mullin began to hear voices and have intuitions that guided him that an earthquake would soon devastate San Francisco and it was only sacrificing lives that could stop the disaster. According to him the carnage in Vietnam war had so far prevented the calamity but with things now soothing down, it was his time he continued to take lives to keep the earthquake away. Mullin then began his murder spree that claimed 13 lives in one year, ranging from an old man to young girls, teenage boys and others. He also killed a priest who he in his delusionary state, presumed to have offered himself as a sacrifice for Mullin’s motives. Mullin is currently facing a life time imprisonment. Image Source

David Berkowitz – Son of Sam

David Berkowitz became very famous because of his letters to the media and police that cited the reason behind his actions, taunting them with details of his offense. He said that it was because he wanted to keep the demons quite, he had committed the crimes. Berkowitz perceived the dogs as demons and believed that when they howled, they asked him to kill women. He was very convinced that his house owners, Jack and his wife, were part of the demon conspiracy and Jack was the commander in chief of all the dogs. Even after shifting to another place, he continued to be haunted by the same opinion with six people losing their lives at his hands and many others left wounded. Berkowitz received a 365 year prison sentence, and accepted that his actions were motivated partly because of his hatred for his mother for leaving him and partly his failure with women. Ted Kaczynski

Infamously known as the Unabomber amongst the regulators, Kaczynski was an American mathematician and a social critic. Stupendosuly bright student, he went to Harvard University at the age of 16 and became an assistant professor at the University of California, Berkeley at age 25. However two years later, the things changed drastically. He went into a secluded house with no running water and electricity learning the ways of living a self sufficient life. Perturbed by the growing technological and infrastructural development around, Kaczynski started a mail-bombing campaign that he ran from1978 to 1995 that took away the lives of 3 people leaving 23 injured. It was only after his brother David recognized his writing in a manifesto that he asked Times or The Washington Post to publish claiming to stop his terrorist activities thereafter, that he was caught by the FBI. Carl Eugene Watts

The child of an army personnel and a kindergarten art teacher, Watts right from his childhood fantasized about torturing and killing girls and young women. Being very dull in studies, Watt had only reached the third grade level by age of 16 and was bullied by fellow students. It was during this age that he was arrested for sexually assaulting 26-year-old Joan Gave. Soon after in his 20s, he began his serial killing targeting women between 14 and 44 years of age, by abducting them and then taking away their lives after continuous torture. He admitted to have committed the crime because he saw evil in women’s eyes. The FBI failed to locate Watts for eight years as he always hunt his prey at different cities. It was only in 1982 when he was identified and convicted for claiming 12 lives in Texas. He was later held as a suspect in 90 unsolved murders. Image Source

Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer

This American serial killer’s actions were motivated by his aggressive nature and sexual desires. His victims (17 men and boys) usually went through a lot of tormenting, raping, dismemberment and similar nasty experiences finally losing their lives at the hands of Dahmer. He also practiced necrophilia and cannibalism and wanting to create “zombies” of his victims, stored their heads, hands and other parts in the basement of his home. Famous Red Sea Wreck

Undoubtedly, the title of the most famous wreck in the Red Sea belongs to Thistlegorm, a sunken British ferry ship. It was built in 1940, and was sunk in 1941 for German bombers. It’s primary cargo was ammunition- mainly artillery shells, rifles, torpedoes and hand grenades. However, on different decks were also found two light tanks, two railroad cars and two automobiles, as well as BSA motorcycles, Morris cars and Bedford trucks. On one of the decks, a Crawler MK II was also found.

The wreck was discovered by Jacques-Yves Cousteau in 1956. It currently lies at depth of about 25-30 meters. It has now become a great feeding, breeding and playing grounds for a lot of marine life including corals, shoal snappers, pennant fish amongst many other species, much to the delight of divers who get to see the wreck and the beautiful marine life weaving in and out of it.

The Power Of The Snow Queen

Those of us who do not live in areas that see the might of the Snow Queen may be extremely surprised to see these pictures. These pictures are ironically of a weather station in the Czech Republic. As you can see there is so much snow there, that the structures as well as automobiles are completely covered in it. It would not be surprising if you thought that they were made out of snow. Only a glimpse of a wall that is shaded from the snowy draft allows us to see any real color except white and realize that the structures are real.

The most beautiful aspect of this collection is that it shows the same weather station at the height of summer and it is remarkable to see the difference in the landscape as well as the sky brought about by change of season.

Abandoned Forest Pioneer Camp

Here are some pictures of an abandoned forest camp and tower called the Pioneer camp. It is interesting to see what time and disuse have done to its structure. What must have been a throbbing camp full of activity, is now forgotten and left to mark the passage of time.

While the tower and everything in it seems comparatively well preserved, the camp itself is a different story. One sees pictures of a large conference room, where the chairs are still standing in uniform rows, but everything around them is torn to shreds. Even the false ceiling is falling apart. Many metal gadgets and appliances are shown, so rusty that it is hard to identify them or their purpose in some cases. Strangely, the logo of the camp, in wrought iron presumably on its entrance wall is remarkably well preserved, even if it is a little run down.
