So let us take a look at some of these enduring legends of the sea with baffling evidences, inexplicable incidents and bizarrely wiped out existence of the crews that may have at some time, sailed merrily across the sea.

Mary Celeste

Go back to 1872 and sail through the Atlantic Ocean, Mary Celeste was a merchant ship found derelict by mariners and became the most famous of all the real-life ghost ships. When located, the ship had all its sails up and was in much seaworthy condition. It housed all the personal belongings of the crew and cargo of over 1,701 barrels of alcohol and ample food storage to last for 6 months. Strangely there was no crew on board and the life boat was missing. A number of theories and stories were spawned around this mysterious disappearance. Many believed the crew to have either mutinied or have left the ship after witnessing some technical or environmental issue finally dying in the life boat. Many said the crew may have eaten a flour contaminated with fungus that led all the passengers to have delusions and go crazy. One report even suggested that there were bloodied weapons on board and blood stains on some of the sail hinting some pirate activity on the ship. Many speculations have continued to emerge with few even blaming the sea monsters or aliens abducting the people. Image Source: 1

Baychimo

The Baychimo was a cargo steamer that was deserted and left to drift the seas near Alaska for nearly forty years. Used to trade pelts and furs the ship was owned by the Hudson Bay Company that was built in Sweden in 1914 and launched in 1920. In 1931, however, the Baychimo’s met the unwanted fate when an arctic icepack moved in, locking the steamer in an icy grip. The crew abandoned the ship fearing that it would break down which strangely did not happen for decades. Baychimo managed to stay afloat, and for the next 38 years, it remained adrift in the waters off Alaska without ever being salvaged. It was seen for the last time in 1969 after which it disappeared forever.

Zebrina

A 3-masted sailing barge was found abandoned two days after it was set off from the port in Southern England in October 1917 with a cargo hold full of coal bound for Saint-Brieuc, France. There was no damage to the ship except for some disarrangement of the rigging. It was believed that a threat of gunfire from a German submarine may have threatened the crew to board the U-boat preparatory and taken to the submarine sinking the vessel. The U-boat on seeing another Allied vessel may have either departed before submerging Zebrina or sunk itself taking the Zebrina crew along. The mystery remains unsolved. Image Source: 1

Kaz II

Also known as “the ghost yacht” was 9.8-meter catamaran which was found drifting 88 nautical miles (160 km) off of the northern coast of Australia on April 18, 2007. Everything on the boat was just perfectly placed with a laptop opened and turned on, food served on the table, radio and  GPS were working and life jackets hung neatly on their hooks. Only things that went missing were its three men who had set out for a journey three days ago. The sails were up but badly shredded. The search was abandoned finally after four days on 22^nd . The speculations were that one of men may have fallen off the board killing the other two who may have tried to save their companion. Image Source: 1

Queen Mary

The Queen Mary was also known as “The Grey Ghost” and is now permanently docked as a tourist attraction and hotel. The ship is said to have ghosts on board that haunt its various areas. Some of these include the first class swimming pool, where guests have seen people in period bathing suits and heard sounds of water splashing. Also Queen Mary’s third class children’s playroom is said to be haunted by the cries of an infant who died on board. People have also sighted a lady dressed in a white evening gown dancing in the Queen’s salon. Other stories that revolve around are phones ringing in the midnight, man appearing in the mirror and lots more giving people a shudder in their spine. Image Source: 1 , 2

What seems like an ordinary peak in Wyoming, created by volcanic activity looks fairly small (386 meters) and ordinary, until you hear all the tales attached to it. There is, of course, an old legend attached which involved the land rising to protect helpless girls from a bear attack. Other legends consider the rock to be holy or evil, but there is definitely some mysticism around it. Even UFOs are thought to have landed at its peak.

However, the most bizarre incident involves skydiver George Hopkins who made it to the peak after jumping off an airplane. But, coming down from it was far from easy. In fact, he was stuck on the isolated peak for more than a week in lashing rain and howling wind, despite repeated attempts of all kinds. He was only rescued when Jack Durance the only climber to have reached the peak came to his rescue.

We see photographs of them entering the subway and dressing up for their parts. Then we are shown Princess Leia, in her trademark ‘Cinnamon Bun’ hairstyle, riding the subway. Funnily, she is shown reading a book called ‘Galactic Rebellion for Dummies’.  In the next few pictures, we see her being captured by the minions of Darth Vader and then Darth Vader himself makes an appearance. As seen in the pictures, there is no doubt that other travelers on the Subway are deeply amused by this show.

Imagine the trains haunting the place at night. The graveyard has become a sort of train museum over the years owing to the number of abandoned trains that occupy the land now. A train enthusiast will find trains from all centuries and walks of life sitting on this land. Most of the trains are rusted owing to being abandoned with no maintenance at all henceforth. Dark and dull walls surrounded by lots of fencing, a large gate and armed watch towers, dusty playgrounds and all this at one of the isolated corners of the city. Inside, around a 6 by 8 feet room guarded by the solid or barred doors with some furniture and fixings on walls and floor.  That’s a usual sight you would notice at prisons round the world that house the most inhumane masses who have been sentenced for imprisonment for their disrespectful and unlawful conduct in the society. However, surprisingly a few lucky criminals also get to taste the prison life with a flavor of luxury and believe or not, that even could be equivalent to living in a five star hotel.

There are a number of prisons in the world that offer the most luxuries and comfortable life to its inmates. Luxury here translates as living in a bright, spacious room with a comfortable bedding, a TV, may be a refrigerator, a study or a library in the building, a gym to stay fit, game courts to spend their leisure time and other such tidbits that a normal prison inmate can only dream of. Now that is definitely a place where our dearest Lindsay Lohan and her likes with lofty pockets, wouldn’t mind putting up. So let us take a look at the top five luxurious prisons and their lavish cells  where prisoners wouldn’t mind their sentence extended for a longer time.

5. Santa Ana Jail, Calif

The city jail is inhibited by the not so offensive criminals who can afford to pay $75 to $127 a day to stay  in clean and better surroundings, far  superior to ones found in central jails.  Also referred to as a five-star Hilton, the jail that offers 10 to 30 beds in most of its programs, allows the occupants(in some cases though)  to bring their laptops or iPods into their rooms that are good enough and comfortable.  Fine ambience with kind and civilized fellow natives , the small cells in  Santa Ana Jail are worth their fee.

4. Otago Corrections Facility, South Otago

An underfloor heating, flatscreen televisions, a library, a gymnasium and plenty of other facilities for recreation, the Otago Corrections Facility offers convict a VIP treatment. The 335-bed prison that also gets a “Milton Hilton” badge is a $218 million facility that has been built to rehabilitate prisoners by presenting a very pleasing and comfortable stay for the inhabitants.

3. Halden Prison, Norway

Offering larger than life experience for the prisoners, the Halden Prison packs a bunch of amenities for its inmates that include the sound studio, jogging trails and a freestanding two-bedroom house where they can even host their families during overnight visits. TVs, minifridges in the spacious and well lighted rooms, modest library, wraparound sofas and birch-colored coffee tables in living rooms and so on, its like a small well established town within concrete walls . The prison that has a capacity of 252 inmates also focuses upon rehabilitation of the hard core criminals to turn them into well behaved humans of society.

2. Austrian Five Star Prison

Located in city of Leoben in Austria, the Leoben Justice Centre is one of the world’s best looking prison that houses complex of courts, offices of Judges, and ofcorse a prison. Also a gym, well furnished and clean cell with a personal TV and lots of other high class amenities would tempt even the common people to commit a crime.(Count me in the list.)

1. Al Capone’s cell, Philadelphia

Yes that might leave you readers a little bewildered for keeping it on the first position.  But this one is my favorite as it dates back to 1929 when Al Capone , the king of Chicago’s underworld was held captive at Eastern State Penitentiary. While the paintless walls have another story to tell, the decor of the room reveals the luxurious life that the crime master lived during his eight years of imprisonment.
